The Farmer and The Cook


The Farmer and The Cook is an all-organic café and grocery in the Ojai Valley featuring a vegetarian kitchen. We opened in 2001. Previously, Olivia was the proprietor of the regionally-beloved City Bakery Café in Ventura. Steve once had a farm in Carpinteria and sold her vegetables at that time. Besides them, there are many other farmers and cooks.

The Farmer and the Cook is located at 339 West El Roblar Drive in Meiners Oaks, a quaint western suburb neighboring the exquisitely charming town of Ojai, California. We are open Tuesday through Thursday from 8 to 8 and Friday-Saturday-Sunday until 9. The Breakfast of chai and muffins is a bit continental and lunch really rocks. On the weekend we feature homegrown acoustic music and serve hand-thrown pizza, Mexican favorites utilizing scratch-made mole sauce, beer-battered fried vegetables, many seasonal salads featuring our own produce all specially prepared by our weekend staff.
Our organic desserts have brought us a reverent following.
People don’t get tired of our salad bar or our split pea soup.

At the Farmer and the Cook we bake our own wheat-free bread and have a robust trade in our own cookies, cakes, chocolate pastries and vegan creations. We do not use wheat, as a rule, instead choosing spelt in deference to the health concerns of others.

There is plenty of gozo at Rio Gozo Farm. That is JOY in Spanish and joy is one of the most dependable products we have. Gozo is commonly found in gardens and farms. Once you get a little gozo up and going it is very tolerant of most pests, withstands dry periods, and grows with a modicum of fertilizer. After gozo becomes a staple of one's diet, it goes with about anything. Actually folks crave it so much it is a wonder everyone does not have a patch of it growing close at hand. Grab up some gozo and get with the flow.
